The Northern Lights Route is a joint Nordic tourist route between Bothnia Bay and Norwegian Sea, covering Finland, Sweden and Norway. The total length of the route is over 600 km. It starts from Tornio-Haparanda, via Kilpisjärvi to Tromsø in Norway, along both sides of the Tornio River.
The Northern Lights Route area possesses a large amount of culturally interesting content, based on the unique geographic location and local common history. However, the cultural and historical stories of this region were far too little used in tourism.
The main goal of the MyStory project is to promote small tourism businesses along the Northern Lights Route through stories, which are related to the local culture. Another goal is to create a common story for the Northern Lights Route by drawing up a common vision and brand for the
route. The MyStory project is based on the already completed Our Stories project. However, MyStory focuses on developing business operations rather than highlighting the local cultural heritage. In the fall of 2019, Our Stories project received the Arctic Awards, which reinforced the ideas to
continue working in promoting Arctic entrepreneurship.
Digitalization and the growth of tourism are global megatrends that local tourism operators in Tornio Valley and Northern Norway areas are interested in grabbing. New digital implementations are a great approach to highlight cultural heritage and stories, as well as to show the area’s special features to local community and tourists.
In the project, cross-border support program will be implemented for selected companies. Digital storytelling workshops and relevant consulting will be included in the program. Digital pilots which utilize augmented reality will also be executed in the project. The aim is to bring up alternative options for utilizing new digital solutions in storytelling.
The project involves participants from both Finland and Norway. Local tourism organizations and municipalities along the route are also involved in project implementation.
