Mother nature looks at a innocent child who rests peacefully on her arm. She swears to protect and to take care of her child if the child will do the same to her. Mother nature tells the child her deepest secrets and teaches them how to survive in the dour and sometimes unpredictable nature.
The child grows up and starts a family. To respect mother nature’s wish the child lives the best way possible without hurting the mother nature. The child tells stories of how they grew up with mother nature and about her teachings to their offspring. This became a tradition where the older generation shared their stories to entertain but as well to teach the younger generation about how to protect the nature and survive in it.
The idea to my work came from the Ihana! named company. Ihana!’s creator Inger Birkelund says that the name of the company came from the time when she got to hold her first grandchild. This story got stuck to my head and I knew right away that I would use it in my work.
The Ihana! company’s goal is to disclose the importance of telling stories, which I wanted to use it as one of the themes in my work. In addition I wanted to represent the beautiful northern nature, importance of it and why we should protect it.

Luontoäiti katsoo pientä viatonta lastaan, joka lepää rauhallisesti hänen käsivarrellaan. Hän vannoo suojelevansa ja hoitavansa lastaan, vain jos lapsi tekee varttuessaan samoin hänelle. Luontoäiti kertoo lapselleen syvimmät salaisuutensa ja opettaa tätä selviytymään karussa ja joskus arvaamattomassa luonnossa.
Lapsi varttuu aikuiseksi ja perustaa perheen. Kunnioittaen luonto äidin toivetta, eli hän parhaalla mahdollisella tavalla satuttamatta luontoäitiään. Luontoäidin lapsi sitten kertoi tarinoita varttumisestaan luontoäidin helmoissa ja tämän opetuksistaan jälkeläisilleen. Tästä syntyi perinne, jossa vanhempi sukupolvi jakoivat omia tarinoitaan viihdyttääkseen, mutta myös opettaakseen nuorempaa sukupolvea, kuten kuinka varjella luontoa ja miten selvitä siellä.
Idean teokseen sain Norjan reissulta Ihana! nimisestä yrityksestä. Ihana! luojan Inger Birkelundin mukaan nimi syntyi, kun hän sai pitää lapsenlastaan ensimmäistä kertaa sylissään. Tämä tarina jäi tiukasti mieleeni ja tiesin heti, että käyttäisin tätä aihetta työssäni hyväksi.
Ihana! yrityksen tavoitteena on tuoda esille tarinankerronnan tärkeyden, joten halusin käyttää sitä yhtenä teemana työssäni. Sen lisäksi halusin kuvata pohjoisen kaunista luontoa, sen tärkeyttä ja minkä takia sitä tulisi suojella.
