In 1736-1737, the city of Tornio was founded as a base for the French expedition, when Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis arrived in the Tornio River Valley. He was send by King of France to measure the shape of the earth. Scientist Anders Hellant from Tornio was the guide for the expedition. Social interaction with the locals was intense and dinners were being held to honor the scientists and according to the time, they danced, played and sang. Suave French men were popular guests, and soon they also became acquainted with local ladies.

Christine and Elisabeth Planström were daughters of a wealthy merchant family. Their father was a highly valued alderman at Tornio. De Maupertuis fell in love with the younger sister Christine. Affection between Christine and Maupertuis grows. But the following summer 1737, the expedition has completed the measurements and the French return to France.

The song “Vajaa Rakkaus – Incomplete without You” is based on this historic event. The song tells about the confused emotions, the sore and the sweet, the desire that Christine and Maupertuis felt when they were separated from each other. Christine believed in Maupertuis’s lame promises when Maupertuis and his partners leave for home trip to France, the courageous girls, Christine and Elisabeth, decide to travel to their loved ones in Paris …

The stories behind the songs are written by singer/artist/landscape architect Elina Söderström and all the songs and lyrics are written by singer-songwriter/producer Esa Rautiainen, from Studio E-City, which is one of the partners in the project Our Stories. Elina and Esa are also members of the music group VisaNordica.

Our task in this project was to make songs with historical perspective. We hope You enjoy the musical journey along the Northern Lights Route with us!

Vajaa Rakkaus

Tornion kaupunki toimi vuosina 1736-1737 ranskalaisen tutkimusretkikunnan tukikohtana, kun Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis saapui Ranskan kuninkaan lähettämänä Torniojokilaaksoon mittaamaan maapallon muotoa.

Laulu ”Vajaa Rakkaus” perustuu tähän historialliseen tapahtumaan. Laulu kertoo niistä sekavista tunteista, kipeästä ja samalla suloisesta kaipuusta, mitä Christine ja Maupertuis tunsivat ollessaan erossa toisistaan. Christine uskoi Maupertuisen lemmen lupauksiin ja kun Maupertuis kumppaneineen lähtee kotimatkalle Ranskaan, päättävät rohkeat tytöt, Christine ja Elisabeth, matkustaa rakkaidensa luo Pariisiin…
